Yoga is one of the fastest growing health and wellness activities across the globe. Though it has been around for about 5,000 years, its teachings are relevant to the modern world. Society is thirsting for a return to mindfulness, holistic health and overall wellness beyond medications and fad diets. Yoga offers an ancient practice and philosophy that can be applied to the modern world to achieve greater health at a physical, mental and spiritual level.
Here are five ways to dive into and learn more about this ancient practice.
- Take a Variety of Classes
There are a wide variety of yoga styles, and each instructor brings something a little different to a class. One of the first mistakes people make is to going to only one yoga class, or only taking classes with one teacher. To really understand yoga, it is best to explore the practice by taking a variety of classes and trying out different instructors.
- Invest in Personal Yoga Sessions
Many studios and instructors offer private yoga classes. Practitioners will benefit from the one-on-one guided classes, adjustments and modifications that can take place during a private class. Private classes also allow the instructor to personalize the class so students can work on specific poses and incorporate elements like meditation and pranayama.
- Invest in a Workshop
Yoga is a vast topic. Most people only have a chance to experience an asana class, but there is so much more to yoga. Workshops may be designed around specific poses, for example a sun salutation workshop or a style of yoga such as Kundalini or Ashtanga.
- Attend a Retreat
There are vacations and then there are retreats! If you have never been on one, it is something you should look into immediately. Yoga retreats are a unique sort of escape, instead of opting for the all-inclusive vacation with unlimited food and drinks, opt for the experience that offers unlimited food and yoga; the opportunity to immerse yourself in health and wellness.
Love to travel? Nervous about traveling along? Yoga retreats give you an opportunity to travel somewhere exotic with a small group so you never feel alone. A yoga retreat might be overnight, a long weekend or perhaps an entire week. If you are just getting used to being in a retreat environment start out small with a weekend, then work your way up.
Many retreats have a specific theme in mind, so it’s a good idea to do some research to find the training that suits your interests and needs.
- Enroll in a Yoga Teacher Training
One of the most common questions people have about attending a yoga teacher training is, “Am I ready?” Regardless of your level of experience with yoga if you want to deepen your practice, attending a yoga teacher training is the single best way. Yoga teacher trainings last from 21-28 days and are totally dedicated to yoga. Ideally, yoga teacher training should include aspects like meditation, mindfulness, pranayama, yoga philosophy, yoga sutras, history of yoga, and of course asana. Enrolling in a yoga teacher training may seem daunting, but sometimes to grow we have to step out of our comfort zone. If you are working with an reputable yoga school that will work with you to meet you wherever your are on your mat and further your practice.
