“The entire property is a playground for your spirit. We swam, played, danced, sang, painted, laughed, jumped, smiled, and just lived from our hearts. I felt good. I felt free. We talked about our dreams and all that went on was encouragement for each other.” ~ Elissa Kravetz
Akasha Ellis first came to Villa Sumaya ten years ago to lead a group yoga retreat. He and our founder, Wendy, immediately felt a strong spiritual connection and forged a friendship and business partnership that has endured for the past decade. She encouraged him to start coming over New Year’s and he has done so annually since 2008.
Akasha teaches both Kundalini and Ashtanga yoga. He met the kundalini master Yogi Bhajan as a boy. The guru bestowed Akasha (whose birth name is Shane) with his spiritual name, because of the bright light that shines from within him. Later, in his twenties, Akasha discovered Ashtanga yogi and studied extensively with Pattabhi Jois and family in Mysore.
Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, Akasha now spends a portion of the year teaching internationally, offering his unique brand of southern hospitality along with decades of dedication as a yogi and teacher to all who cross his path. He teaches to all levels and welcomes people of all ages, shapes and sizes to the practice.
We are thrilled to welcome back Akasha and his students for another week this December to celebrate life and connect with their highest self, each other and Mother Earth!
“Akasha’s New Years retreat is connection, love, light, awareness, pure happiness and radiant light.
Akasha is a true yogi- knowledgeable about many aspects of kundalini, flow, ashtanga, mediation, chanting, healing, with a direct link to Yogi Bhajan since he was just 8 years old. He is an educated, kind teacher catering to all levels, making every person feel that they are just where they should be in class. He is encouraging and supportive, taking you outside your comfort zone, while grounding you to stay true to yourself. We are all on the journey together, one breath breathes us all, as he teaches.
Villa Sumaya rises up to meet him in a peaceful, idyllic setting. The lake is a healing vortex, the divine mother. The staff and healers are unparalleled in their respective fields. The food is clean and delicious, the hammocks, hot tub, sauna, all there for the taking. To combine such magical elements with a true master teacher is a gift that i am lucky to have been given
I have gone twice and will continue to go to raise my consciousness higher, to laugh and dance, to chant and sing together in perfect harmony. The people on the retreat are open, full of heart, acceptance, loving guidance, brilliant conversations, and wonderful to walk with on the path of awakening. This retreat is the highlight of my year, every year.” ~ Aly Scott
