About Erin and Clarissa
Born and raised in the Midwest, I took my first yoga class in 2003 but found my passion and regular practice while studying Health Promotion and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa. Before teaching yoga I instructed various fitness classes (e.g., kickboxing, boot camp, dance) as a certified American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Physiologist.
In Fall 2013, I began a 30-day intensive 200-hour yoga teacher training at Anamaya Retreat Center in Montezuma, Costa Rica. Under the instruction of Paula Tursi of Reflections Yoga and Peter Kaaberbol Kristensen of LagoCPH, I learned the key principles of yoga and teaching, receiving my 200-RYT certification alongside 30 other beautiful souls. I have actively taught in several cities throughout my tenure and am currently teaching in Austin, TX. In 2015 I co-founded the Yoga & Beer arm of Wabi Sabi Health and Wellness, bringing yoga to a new population of practitioners in an open and accepting space.
I believe the best teachers are those who continue their personal practice and are lifelong students. My grandfather instilled a love for learning, exploration, and travel in me at a young age. I have attended yoga festivals throughout the country including the Dubuque Yoga Festival and Wanderlust-Aspen. My continuing education has included workshops in pranayama (breath control), spiritual development, Thai Massage, and yoga anatomy. I continue to travel to learn from teachers near and far because I truly believe that if you aren’t learning and creating new memories what is the point in living?
Since 2013 I have taught over 1000 hours of yoga in group as well as individual settings with students ranging from 1 to 90. My classes are filled with unique and exciting flows emphasizing breath and alignment aimed at creating a sound connection between mind, body, and spirit. My favorite styles to teach are Vinyasa, Restorative, Gentle Hatha, Yin and Fusion styles of yoga allowing my students to find their own breath and flow in practice. My primary interest is creating optimal wellness through all facets of life and using yoga as a moving meditation to encourage my students to find themselves and their heart in this world. So come flow and have fun with me today!
Clarissa Thompson, 200 RYT
Clarissa is a 200 hour RYT working toward her 500 (completion est. May 2017) and has been teaching at local studios in the Quad City region of Illinois/Iowa since 2014. She discovered yoga in college and would attend weekly classes intrigued by the way yoga allowed her to destress and find a sense of peace. The path of transformation is one that has become daily life for Clarissa as she continues to grow as a person and teacher and she is excited to share what she has experienced and learned with her students. The path of self-discovery is a lifel
ong one, but often made more understandable with the right teacher and guide and after almost a decade as a yoga student Clarissa is ready to share what she has learned with her students. Clarissa teaches regular classes at studios and online and hopes to instill confidence, power, and grace into her classes and students.
She maintains a dedicated Ashtanga practice which has fueled her desire to learn more and in December 2015 she spent a month in Mysore, India studying at the KPJ Ashtanga Yoga Institute with Sharath Jois. She has also spent time with a variety of knowledgeable teachers learning from as many sources of knowledge as she can.
Clarissa is also an avid user of social media and blogger writing about her personal experiences and life on and off the mat. She and her husband Wade like to take adventures and enjoy camping, hiking, road tripping and any means of exploration!! In September and October of 2016 they spent 5 weeks on the road exploring the West coast taking on a variety of new adventures and are always up to try something new! She’s excited for this yoga and adventure retreat in Guatemala and can’t wait to explore and share in your transformation during this retreat!
