Journey with us for a yoga vacation to traverse new roads, meet new people, and explore new ways of being in your body and in the world. Each day we will greet the morning with a varied practice of yoga, pranayama, and meditation and close most days the same way.
In between, we will explore local sites such as the Chi Chi market and town of Santiago. One day we will hike to El Pico De Cielo with local tour guides and enjoy a picnic lunch at the summit.
The Sanskrit word Seva means service. As part of our week we will practice Seva by supporting a local community. There will be plenty of time for integrating your experience with reading, resting, or just hanging out in the lush gardens or pool area at Villa Sumaya. The trip includes three fresh, vegetarian meals each day (meat options are available at an additional cost).
About the Instructors
A Santa Fe based yoga teacher, educator and human being, Jacci feels she has been on a journey of awareness and awakening her whole life. She reflects that she was practicing “yoga” before she ever practiced yoga. This way of being alive and present for every experience is what calls to her most deeply and infuses her teaching. She uses the practice of yoga to see how her habits restrict, distract and cause suffering. Using the skill of witnessing, which she learned from her teachers Yoganand Michael Carroll and Sudhir Jonathon Foust, she is now better able to see her habits and open to her life finding more freedom and joy.
As a teacher, Jacci invites her students to go inside and feel rather than focusing on what the pose looks like. She uses the techniques of inquiry, witnessing and allowing to encourage students to be present with their life in the moment.
Jacci has over 1500 hours of training in a wide variety of yoga disciplines in addition to receiving her Masters of Health Science from The George Washington University. She completed her 200 and 500 hour yoga teacher training at the Kripalu Center for Yoga in addition to completing a second 500 hour certification in yoga therapy (ERYT-500). She is a certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT), registered prenatal yoga teacher (RPYT), as well as a Thai Yoga Massage Therapist.
Jacci is the Executive Director of the Pranakriya School of Yoga Healing Arts as well as Director of their 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training, Basic Prenatal, Restorative Yoga, and Gentle Yoga Teacher Trainings.
Movement, rhythm, and dance have been my primary sources of joy from earliest memory. A childhood injury at an early age, however, made me conscious of what a gift it really was to be able to move freely. The result has been an inspiring journey through life.
That injury brought me to a renewed relationship to my body and to an even deeper, more conscious exploration of the joy—and the health benefits—to be found in movement.
My journey began when I entered my first dance class at the age of four. Years of training led to dance performance and choreography, gradually evolving into a career in the fitness profession. In my late thirties I discovered yoga. This was a revelation, for it proved to be the culminating discipline that enabled me to integrate all my interests. In my personal life, yoga has become my primary mode of self-expression. In my teaching, it becomes one of three pillars: dance, fitness, yoga.
These pillars support what has turned out to be an even more encompassing love: teaching itself. I realized I had a passion for sharing the joy of movement with others. A significant part of my life, now, lies in helping students open to the sources of joy within their own bodies. I take delight in seeing them respond to what is really a simple truth: Movement is life.
In 2007, I became a Certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher. The same year I also finished my studies with the Cancer Exercise Training Institute and became certified as a Cancer Exercise Specialist.
I continue to study with Elise Miller, a Senior Iyengar Teacher, and have certified with her as a Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer.
Among all these activities, I can honestly say that my proudest moment was the deep satisfaction I felt after creating and completing a special video program for cancer patients and survivors: The Next Step, Vol. 1: Restorative Exercises After Breast Cancer.

Nourish and replenish your body, mind and heart, while being surrounded by spectacular views of majestic volcanoes, lush vegetation and the breathtaking blue waters of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala…known as one of the most beautiful and energetically spiritual places on earth. Join Kristina Ahern for her 3rd year of leading yoga participants on a journey of self discovery and transformation at the serene and welcoming Villa Sumaya. The incredible palpable energies, naturally healing surroundings and kindness of VS staff and the locals of Lake Atitlan are the perfect backdrop for her teachings.
Kristina’s yoga retreat at Villa Sumaya is more than a ‘resort experience’….it is truly a LIFE experience! Past retreat participants confirm this sentiment:
“The yoga retreat at Villa Sumaya far exceeded my hopes and expectations! The tranquil setting of Villa Sumaya on the shores of Lake Atitlan with its gracious and attentive staff provided a perfect backdrop for our yoga retreat. Our incredible yoga instructor, Kristina Ahern, led us on a week-long physical and spiritual journey, providing helpful guidance and adaptations to meet each individual’s needs and capabilities. The schedule allowed plenty of time to relax, reflect, explore our surroundings and participate in a number of unique personal and cultural experiences located within the retreat center and surrounding villages. It truly was a transformative experience and one that I will cherish for a lifetime!” ~ R.C. 2018
“My first impression of Villa Sumaya was of ease and openness. The staff gave the impression of sincerely caring for our well-being. My room was comfortable and beautiful and the meals were delicious and plentiful. Also, unlike so many that claim to be environmentally friendly, Villa Sumaya truly lives up to the moniker “eco-retreat center”.
Kristina led a twice-daily practice that was transformational. The theme she chose for the week was ideal for the setting and level of the participants. With her gentle guidance in this palpably spiritual environment, I felt that my practice was opened to another level.” ~ J.L. 2017
INSPIRATION, PERSPIRATION, TRANSFORMATION: this 3-word model created by T.K.V. Desikachar for progression toward one’s potential in life and yoga will be explored during this weeklong retreat. With nearly 20 years of teaching and chanting experience within the Krishnamacharya/T.K.V. Desikachar tradition….creativity, compassion and a deep connection to the sacred within the natural world are woven into the fabric of Kristina’s approach. Each individual participant is honored and respected according to his/her capabilities and is gently encouraged to uncover personal potential with lightness, compassion and kindness toward self.
The morning practice will include asana, pranayama and chant to inspire, energize and ‘open up’ the body, breath and heart. In the afternoon, the focus will turn more inward with gentle movement, mantra japam, ritual, visualization & meditation. There will be enough time between the sessions for you to relax & assimilate the morning practice, schedule healing sessions or participate in other activities offered through Villa Sumaya. Wednesday is the scheduled day off (can be changed with group consensus). Kristina is keeping the group to a maximum of 14 participants to support the energetic cohesiveness of the group and the development of meaningful relationships within it. Note that group activities and tours can be scheduled depending upon interest and energy (at extra cost)
No yoga experience is required for this retreat…only a willingness to step outside of what is familiar, supported by a seasoned yoga teacher (Kristina is certified E-RYT500 with Yoga Alliance, IAYT Certified Yoga Therapist and trained Vedic Chant teacher) a sanga of retreat participants and the caring & attentive staff of Villa Sumaya.
As a gesture of respect and generosity toward the indigenous Mayan culture in Guatemala, a portion of each participant’s tuition will be donated to Multi-Colores http://www.multi-colores.org, a non-profit formed by the owners of Cultural Cloth http://www.culturalcloth.com to support Mayan artisans in the Lake Atitlan area. In the past 2 years, retreat participants have helped fund work stations designed for rughooking and empowerment leadership programs for the Multi-Colores women. We will take time to visit their offices located in Panajachel to see their beautiful work during our stay. There are also many other opportunities to support the indigenous people during your time in Guatemala. You may want to consider arriving a few days early or staying a few days after the retreat (or both) to further immerse yourself in the Guatemalan cultural experience.

Join Erika Trice for a week of deep healing on the shores of the Lake Atitlan, described as “the most beautiful lake in the world,” by Alexander von Humboldt. This is the perfect setting for our retreat. Along the lake are a dozen villages where life and customs have changed little over the centuries, each offering a rich and tapestry of food, color, language, and culture.
Each morning will begin with qigong, pranayama, and meditation followed by a dynamic asana practice. The late afternoons/early evenings sessions will explore a softer more inwardly focused practice leading towards meditation. This will be an immersion into the profound healing effects of yoga. Included in our exploration will also be philosophy and chakra work. Between practices, days will be yours to explore, hike, swim in the gorgeous lake or visit the local communities. We will gather together for delicious meals and share our experiences. This week will be an immersion both in asana and in life.
