Karlie Lemos & Dana Makover ~ A pilgrimage to Lake Atitlan
Jun 15 – Jun 22 all-day

Join Karlie Lemos and Dana Makover on a sacred pilgrimage to the distant Mayan stronghold of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Nestled in a landlocked bay on the north shore of beautiful of the lake, our retreat center is located on 18 acres in the traditional homeland of the indigenous Maya. In this private setting, you will discover a deeply healing environment, an open-air yoga studio, and pristine waters surrounded by majestic landscapes including three spectacular volcanoes. This area is known to locals as “the belly button of the Earth,” and it is in this serene natural setting where yoga can do its best work, grounding your body and uplifting your spirits.

About the leaders.

Karlie Lemos, E-RYT-500, discovered her yoga practice in 1998. In 2005 she completed her 200 hour Hatha teacher training through the lens of Iyengar Yoga. Karlie went on to complete her 500 hour certification under the guidance of Christina Sell, after years spent immersed in Anusara Yoga. Karlie also draws from her background in Ashtanga Vinysasa, Yin and Restorative yoga.

She is known for her skill in sequencing asana and offering safe, well-rounded and grounded practices; as well as being able to meet all students from yoga beginners to seasoned practitioners where they’re at.

She is inspired by the deep well of yoga philosophy and threads these perspectives into her asana classes from a light-hearted and playful perspective. She offers a space for students to use their body as a vehicle for growth, healing, discovery and empowerment.

Dana Makover discovered yoga through a voice teacher who incorporated yoga asana into the art of singing when she was only fifteen years old. Having already suffered from a number of eating disorders and severe anxiety and depression, yoga and singing together created a safe space where being in her body didn’t seem so bad. Having spent her childhood travelling between Israel and Texas, “home” was a loosely defined word. Yoga became a major building block in the long process of making her body into her home.

Dana considers travel a necessary tool for opening her mind and heart. The process of purposely placing oneself in a strange environment surrounded by different sounds, cultures, languages and foods creates more flexibility in the mind than any yoga asana ever could. Through experiencing others in their environments, we learn to better understand ourselves. Travel can truly be a journey to the self through others, a beautifully human way to connect.

Women’s sacred journey

Breathe, stretch, relax, and connect with your center while sharing in the experience with other women. This retreat is not about ‘writing’ as a subject or art form. In this retreat, we ourselves are the art form. Every woman has a voice in her own life – we are gathering together to rise it up and own our self-expression.

Inspired by the four shamanic directions and rising the feminine, we embark on a revealing week of re-igniting the voices of our hearts and empowering ourselves as the storytellers of our lives.

Sample daily flow
Guests arrive on Friday, June 28th afternoon to relax and settle in. We’ll open our circle in the evening after dinner. Our daily flow will begin on Saturday, June 29th.

Here’s a sample schedule. Please note on two days, we will have only one writing circle to allow some space for excursions.

7.45 Sauna, Circle, Healing Ceremonies (some evenings)

Delicious meals are vegetarian. Chicken/fish ($7 extra per meal) and alcohol can be added to meals at your discretion.

Relax in a hammock and enjoy the views, swim in the lake, do a meditative walk on nature trails, receive a spa treatment, dip in the solar hot tub & pools, or detox in the sauna in daily breaks.

On two days, we’ll hold longer breaks and offer optional group excursions – visits to villages or hiking/kayaking adventure options.

You will also participate in afternoon/evening ceremonies with guest facilitators as we stoke our soul voices and connect with our energies – such as Sound Healing, Traditional Mayan Fire, Cacao Ceremony, and Movement or Dance.

Guests are advised to fly into Guatemala City by 1pm on June 28th and book return flights for mid afternoon on July 6th or following day. We can provide hotel recommendations for stays in Antigua or near the airport before or after the retreat.

travel tip & green season
Lake Atitlan has beautiful villages to explore (weaving, artisan) and cultural and wildlife tourist activities. It’s also a gorgeous place to simply soak up the volcano views and nature. On your way from the airport, the UNESCO World Heritage charming streets of Antigua offer many colorful, cultural treasures.

It’s always recommended to stay at the lake and in Guatemala for some extra time and enjoy the beauty, if your schedule allows.

Please note we may be visited by late afternoon or evening atmospheric seasonal rains after warm and sunny days. Though during July and August, the “canicula” usually arrives and the rains disappear completely and we’re left with all the green lush views.

“What Women Have Said”

“The power of this circle still gives me tingles. It is the power of togetherness, of shared adversity & joy. Of shared accomplishments and trials. Of reaching deep and sharing our own heart song. Of looking in each women’s face and knowing we belong.” (Maggie, January 2018)

“Our Storyteller Within retreat on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala felt like a week in paradise. During writing circles we explored our inner most desires, re-wrote personal stories that didn’t serve us, and let ourselves be truly honest. Aimee is an amazing facilitator with a stunning ability to inspire and affirm. This retreat has undoubtedly changed the trajectory of my life–I could not recommend it any more highly.” (Mary, August 2018)

“My experience of this retreat was nothing short of magical. I shed toxic stories that held me captive for far too long. I rediscovered parts of myself that were buried somewhere within for indeterminate amounts of time, and even discovered aspects of myself that I never knew existed. I spoke truths that I previously never dared. I danced, stomped, howled at the moon, cried, felt alive in ways I didn’t know were possible, profoundly connected to myself and other beautiful women, and emerged with a light inside of myself that continues to shine brightly even a month after returning to “real” life.” (Ellen, August 2017)

About the leader:

Chelsea was first introduced to yoga as a freshman in college at the University of New Hampshire and has been practicing since. A long time vegetarian with a passion for the outdoors, it was a natural fit. An active person, initially drawn to the physical practice, the movement of the asanas and the strengthening aspect. As Chelsea did more yoga and her practice deepened, she soon became aware of the mental and spiritual changes that yoga was having on her. How her whole attitude and outlook could shift from a single yoga class. Yoga has taught Chelsea many life lessons. It has taught her presence and breath and has made her more aware of her natural surroundings. It has taught Chelsea to pause and appreciate the little things, and how truly small we are in this big world.

Chelsea received her 200HR yoga teacher certification at Yandara Yoga Institute in December of 2012- this one choice has changed her life.  In April of 2015, she received her 500HR yoga teacher certification, also at Yandara Yoga Institute.  While at Yandara, Chelsea also studied Reiki and completed her Reiki Certification.  Chelsea has been a registered member of Yoga Alliance since November of 2012.

Chelsea is a face of the Vail Yoga Community as a Lululemon Ambassador.  When not teaching in the Vail Valley, you can find Chelsea running both local and international yoga retreats, skiing, hiking, camping, rafting, selling real estate or exploring outside with her husband and border collie mix, Buka!
